Many people say that the Bible does not talk about abortion. However, they do not know the Holy Scriptures, because the Word of God is alive and effective and there have always been the same passions, desires and sins in the human being. Times change, but the passions and sins of man do not.
The central passage of this study is clear in the book of Isaiah:
“Would I bring a baby to the point of birth and not let it be born? says the Lord. Or would I let a baby be conceived but shut the womb to prevent its birth? says your God.” Isaiah 66:9
NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE CHILDREN IS A CURSE IN THE BIBLE
Abortion was considered a great curse in the Bible. There are numerous biblical passages that speak to us about how bad behavior and a life of sin lead to the curse of sterility and the inability to have children.
There are several cases of women who show in the Bible their great suffering for being barren and not being able to have children.
- Sarai the wife of Abraham: “Sarai was barren. She had no child.” Genesis 11:30
- Rachel the wife of Jacob: “Jacob’s anger burned against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you fruit from your womb?” Genesis 30:2
- Anna the mother of the prophet Samuel: “Hannah’s rival kept taunting her to make her miserable, because the Lord had kept Hannah from having children.” 1 Samuel 1:6
They are holy women of God, and God rewarded them by giving them sons (Isaac, Joseph, and Samuel respectively). Because effectively the one who gives birth and who gives birth is God.
On the other hand, there are passages that clearly show us how God pronounces the punishment of not being able to have children. This is the admonition that the prophet Hosea issues on the rebellious people to God.
“Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird— no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!” Hosea 9.11.
“Give to them, Lord—but what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.” Hosea 9.14.
God promises us, however, that if we are on your path there will be no woman who aborts (naturally) or is sterile.
“You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from your midst. No one will miscarry or be childless in your land. I will grant you the full number of your days.” Exodus 23:25-26.
PROVOKED ABORTION IN THE BIBLE
Induced abortion does not appear in the bible. Not because there was no such abortion, but because perhaps there was no way to do it medically 2500 years ago. Although there were no means available to do so, we do find numerous passages about said desire and sacrifice was used as an excuse for it. At that time, instead of going to an abortion clinic, a sacrifice was made to the fashionable god. The one who sacrificed (killed) a newborn, which is an aberration for God, something that is manifested in various biblical passages throughout history.
“God in the way that they worship, because they do for their gods every detestable thing that the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in fire for their gods.” Deuteronomy 12:31
“Let no one be found among you who makes his son or his daughter pass through fire, or who uses divination, or who engages in fortune telling, or who observes omens, or who practices witchcraft,…” Deuteronomio 18:10
“They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to make their sons and daughters pass through the fire to Molek, something I did not command them to do. It did not enter my mind that they would do such a disgusting thing and cause Judah to sin.” Jeremiah 32:35
We have the case of two kings of Judah as they offered their children in the fire:
- King of Judah: Ahaz “He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made his son pass through the fire, according to the shameful practices of the nations which the Lord had driven out before the people of Israel..” 2 Kings 16:3
- King of Judah: Manasseh “He made his son pass through the fire. He practiced fortune telling and sought omens and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He greatly increased the evil he did in the eyes of the Lord and provoked him to anger.” 2 Kings 21:6
These biblical passages show us how in the past they believed that by killing their children they would be better off, just as today women who abort and kill their baby also think that they will be better off. Before, the excuse of offering it as a sacrifice to please a certain god was used, and today the goddess is the woman who aborts. In fact, the woman who aborts today does so to satisfy her desire or her ego and she cannot oppose the man who fathered the baby, nor the parents of said adolescent if she is a minor.
These practices became so widespread that when King Josiah (of Judah) converted to the Lord and knew the Bible, he ordered the practice to be abolished because the people used to kill their children (probably those who were not wanted) with the excuse of offering them to the god Moloch or the god Tophet.
“He defiled Tophet, which was in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, so that no one could make his son or daughter pass through the fire for Molek.” 2 Kings 23:10
It must also be said that, like King Josiah, countries like Poland that are abolishing abortion by repealing said rights in 2021
It is incredible how there is a waiting list in all the countries of Europe for married couples who cannot have children and that the different States allow abortion. Currently, the average waiting time is 6 to 8 years according to CORA (Coordinator of Adoption and Foster Care Associations). There are even waiting lists for people who want to adopt children with disabilities and Down syndrome..
GOD DESIRES PROCREATION AND BLESSES THOSE WHO PROCREATE
There are many people who always argue difficult economic situations or lack of employment, or being rented to not have children or to get rid of them (abort). However, God highlights 2 complicated biblical situations to make us understand how he is above it:
- The first one is found after the Earth was destroyed by the flood. The Word tells us how “God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.'” Genesis 9:1 Again the Lord confirms it emphasizing “But you, be fruitful and multiply. Increase abundantly on the earth, and multiply on it.” Genesis 9:7
- The second was when the people of Israel were taken to Babylon as slaves. Far from their homeland, as foreigners and in captivity, God said to them: “The Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says this to all the exiles whom I have deported from Jerusalem to Babylon. Build houses and settle in them. Plant gardens and eat their fruit. Get married and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there, and do not decrease in number.” Jeremiah 29:4-6
GOD BLESSES AND GIVES PROSPERITY IF WE HAVE CHILDREN
Lastly, there is a whole series of verses in different books of the Bible that tell us how to the extent that we have children, God will bless us. Man is the most precious being in God’s creation, and we are his instrument for procreation. That is why God rewards those who do his will.
“God blessed them when he said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” Genesis 1:22
“Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:28
“Indeed, children are a heritage from the Lord. The fruit of the womb is a reward from him. Sons born during one’s youth are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they dispute with enemies at the city gate.” Psalms 127:3-5
“ He will love you and bless you and multiply you. He will bless the fruit from your womb and the fruit from your soil, your grain and your new wine and your fresh olive oil, the offspring of your cattle and the young of your flock upon the land that he swore to your fathers that he would give you.” Deuteronomy 7:13
“You will be blessed in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your soil, and in the fruit of your animals: the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock.” Deuteronomy 28:4
“The Lord will cause you to be overflowing with good things: with the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your animals, and the fruit of the soil of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.” Deuteronomy 28:11
“The Lord your God will cause you to be overflowing with good things from all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your animals, and in the fruit of your soil. Once again he will rejoice over your prosperity, just as he rejoiced over your fathers,” Deuteronomy 30:9
